The Museum of Zoology records consist of correspondence concerning the Louisiana State University Biological Field Laboratory at Grand Isle, La. (1948-1973), surveys of Louisiana oyster beds (1951-1969), and other records on the history and operation of the museum and the research of the Dept. of Zoology and Physiology (1928-1972). Also included are microfilm of the museum's catalog of specimens of birds (nos. 1-130,000), mammals (nos. 1-20,000), lower vertebrates (nos. 1-20,000), and amphibians and reptiles (nos. 20,001-40,000), as well as Francis Weston's bird notes and records (1920-1968).

The Louisiana State University Museum of Zoology was formed in 1936 when its first director, George H. Lowery Jr., assembled a few study specimens of birds in a classroom in Audubon Hall. It operated under the auspices of the Dept. of Zoology and Physiology before becoming a subsidiary of the new Museum of Natural Science around 1953, but still retained the name Museum of Zoology.
